"This painting, a series of 81 self portraits, took about six months to complete. Using the style of other artists, I was exploring the idea of identity - how we appear to be different people in different circumstances while essentially remaining the same.

"As an illustrator I had worked in a variety of styles, but this painting gave me the chance to work out who I was as a painter whilst paying homage to my artistic forebears."
