"This painting, a series of 81 self portraits, took about six months to complete. Using the style of other artists, I was exploring the idea of identity - how we appear to be different people in different circumstances while essentially remaining the same.

"Having worked as an illustrator in a wide variety of styles, I was having trouble working out who I was as a painter.

"This multi self portrait helped free me from my fixation with style whilst allowing me to explore other ways of working and looking at the world. It is also a kind of homage to my artistic forebears."
