Before becoming a full-time painter, David turned his drawing skills to illustration. He worked as a freelance illustrator and visualiser for nearly eight years, producing work for advertising and publishing projects, until book jackets became the main outlet for his work.

In the end, his illustrations found their way onto over 1,200 book jackets, of all genres from Westerns to period romances.
